Palo Alto, CA (On-Site)/Internship
About the role
Join our embedded systems team as a Firmware Engineering Intern and help build the low-level real-time firmware that powers our robotic hands. You’ll work directly with microcontrollers, sensors, and motor drivers while contributing to high-performance robotic actuation and sensing pipelines.
Requirements
- 01Pursuing a BS or MS in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields
- 02Experience with Rust or C/C++ for embedded systems
- 03Hands-on experience with microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, Nordic, or similar)
- 04Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN/CAN-FD
- 05Basic understanding of control loops (PID), timing, interrupts, and real-time constraints
- 06Ability to read schematics and use basic lab equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer)
- 07Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- 08(+) Experience with embedded Rust (Embassy), FreeRTOS, or bare-metal development
- 09(+) Experience with motor drivers, encoders, IMUs, or tactile sensors
- 10(+) Knowledge of ROS/ROS2, Python test scripts, or hardware-in-the-loop testing
Details & responsibilities
- 01Develop and test firmware for sensing, actuation, and closed-loop control on embedded platforms
- 02Bring up new hardware: motor drivers, IMUs, encoders, tactile sensors, communication modules
- 03Implement drivers, interrupt handlers, DMA pipelines, and low-latency data acquisition loops
- 04Work with senior engineers to tune control loops for robotic hand actuation
- 05Assist in building hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups for characterization and automated testing
- 06Participate in debugging sessions involving real hardware, scopes, analyzers, and firmware logs
- 07Collaborate with AI, perception, and mechanical teams to validate system performance
Compensation & benefits
- 01Work directly with cutting-edge embedded hardware for humanoid robotics
- 02Mentorship from senior firmware, robotics, and systems engineers
- 03Hands-on access to advanced labs, tools, and custom robotic platforms
- 04Highly competitive internship compensation
- 05Opportunity for full-time return offer based on performance
